Bake Off’s Paul Hollywood suffers backlash against Japan travel show

The Great British Cake Judge Paul Hollywood faces backlash for comments made about Japanese culture on his new TV show.

Hollywood has followed its car show and various baking series with a brand new travel-based spin-off, Paul Hollywood eats Japan, which premiered Tuesday night (April 28).

Apparently, a food tour in Japan, Hollywood ate a lot of delicious food that reminded us of when we could actually go to restaurants, but seemed to display some ignorance of the culture.

“Japan makes me nervous because it’s rice and noodles, doesn’t it?” he said at one point. “They don’t bake bread, they don’t bake cakes!

Hollywood then expressed its bewilderment as it looked at the many items on display in a bakery, as it assumed that Japan was just a “rice culture.” At another point, he also challenged a Michelin-starred ramen chef to try a Pot Noodle.

Paul Hollywood eats Japan viewers were taken aback by the presenter who seemed so casual about his lack of research on culture.

Elsewhere, the bakery judge tried to show a more wacky side (well, as much as he could) with all kinds of fun activities in Tokyo, including karaoke on his own.

Hollywood was also treated to a great meal when its guide Kilara took it out for a traditional meal – and the TV baking judge made all kinds of other missteps.

“Please stop pointing with chopsticks. It’s rude,” she corrected him at one point, before later lashing out when he stabbed her food with the sticks.

“It’s childish. You’re like a 5 year old,” Kilara chided.

When Kilara mistook Hollywood for canned bread, he made another mistake trying to break into it on a busy street.

“There’s another little tag slap for me,” he admitted. “Apparently you can’t eat on the street, in the subway, while driving.”

Paul Hollywood eats Japan continues next Tuesday (May 5) at 9 p.m. on Channel 4. The Great British Cake also airs on Channel 4.
