Japan Airlines and Haneda Airport take top spots in air travel punctuality

Harsh times for air travel have caused a shake up in Cirium’s punctuality performance ranking for the industry, with Japan Airlines Co. and Tokyo’s Haneda Airport rising to the top for punctuality.

Other carriers include Hawaiian Airlines Inc., Red Wings ZAO and Avianca Holdings SA, Cirium said in its first monthly performance report on time since February 2020. The aviation analytics firm said it had relaunched the report as air travel returned. with 117% more flights carried out in May compared to the same month last year, mainly thanks to domestic flights.

Rankings use a series of metrics including whether departures and arrivals are early or exactly on time, arrivals are within 15 minutes of schedule, and flights are operating within their scheduled door-to-door time block. .

“As flights return, it is a level playing field to re-analyze airline and airport punctuality – a positive sign for the industry,” said Jeremy Bowen, CEO of Cirium , in a press release. “While the factors causing the delays – congested airspace, taxiways or connecting passengers – simply did not exist in 2020, they are expected to return slowly in 2021 and 2022.”

In the Asia-Pacific region, Japan Airlines climbed to number one for on-time arrivals in May from May 10 in the previous report, followed by domestic rival ANA Holdings Inc. and then Air New Zealand Ltd ., Garuda Indonesia and Korean Air Lines Co. In North America, Hawaiian Airlines retained first place and Air Canada climbed to second place outside the top 10. Southwest Airlines Co. slipped from second to ninth place. , although it operated the most flights with 89,297.

Moscow-based Red Wings leads in Europe, followed by Vueling Airlines SA, Iberia, KLM and Aeroflot, according to Cirium. Avianca was the most punctual airline in Latin America, ahead of Azul SA and Gol in second and third.

Haneda Airport achieved an on-time departure score of 96.86%. The other places in the top five spot hubs were taken by Sheremetyevo International of Moscow, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County, and Philadelphia International. Of the 20 ranked airports, Miami International was the lowest with a score of 83.14%.

The top 20 airports collectively handled more than 500,000 flights in May, down just 4% from February 2020, while their punctuality improved by three points, Cirium said.
