The United States has issued a travel warning for Japan regarding the country’s COVID-19 outbreak, amid heightened surveillance just weeks before the Tokyo Olympics.

But U.S. Olympic officials said they were confident their athletes would be able to participate safely in the Games.

Japan already bans most travelers from entering the country.

It has long had a low number of COVID cases, but is now experiencing a new wave of infections pushing the health care system in some cities to its limits.

Japan has recorded more than 700,000 infections and 12,000 deaths from COVID-19 from the virus.

The US Center for Disease Control (CDC) said that “travelers should avoid all travel” to the country, warning that under “the current situation in Japan, even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk of contracting and spread ”variants of COVID.
